SANCTUARY

Sanctuary captures the story of asylum seekers housed at a remote refugee encampment on an abandoned airstrip at Floyd Bennett Field during the winter of 2024.

Over 175,000 refugees have arrived in New York City the past two years. As they go through the asylum process, most of them are housed in converted hotels or on Randall’s Island. The unlucky ones are moved to isolated Floyd Bennett Field, a historical Brooklyn airport decommissioned in 1970, nearly 20 miles away from Manhattan with no nearby community. Currently, there are over 2,000 people living at the encampment.
